Hey! So I work for a business for about a year now as an independent contractor teaching music. In the middle of the year they changed their program and had all employees sign a new policy with a non compete policy. I have had costumers of the business ask me if they can just start coming to take lessons from me instead of the business due to unnecessary and expensive charges. I know this is probably not legal, do I have to wait a year after I leave the company, or is there another way around it? Especially since the contract isn’t straight forward with their expectations.

Non-solicitation sounds dumb to me. That's the law of the jungle, the market at its best. Now where that should really apply is in government. The revolving door and back scratching is despicable, but private sector folks fucking each other over should be fine.
